Research on Hedgerows and Field-margins.
Phoenix ecology staff were involved in conducting DEFRA-funded research trials to improve the establishment of Welsh hedgerows. Long-term monitoring of newly-planted hedges at different sites highlighted the importance of using local provenances of common hedging species such as Hawthorn and the additional wildlife benefits of planting locally-adapted combinations of native Welsh hedge-forming trees and shrub species particularly in attracting invertebrates and birds. The additional importance of provision of adequate hedge fencing and weed suppression by mulching were also clearly demonstrated.
